Eventually, local organizations around Duluth began noticing that the quality of the water in Lake Superior was deteriorating. Fishing groups were noticing that the fish were dying. The taconite tailings being dumped into Lake Superior contained asbestos fibers. Asbestos fibers are known to cause mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer.
