Reserve Mining Company had a processing plant in Silver Bay, MN. Here they took the mined rock and separated the valuable iron from the surrounding taconite. For every ton of iron extracted, two tons of taconite came with it. They sold the iron and dumped the taconite tailings into Lake Superior. The processing plant in Silver Bay dumped forty-seven tons of pollution into Lake Superior per minute.
