MILES LORD: A WARRIOR FIGHTING FOR JUSTICE/Minnesota Trial, 2009
“This court cannot honor profit over human life.” This quote, spoken by Judge Miles Lord, truly represents his passion towards justice. My topic is Judge Miles Lord and the case United States vs. Reserve Mining.
I chose this because it is a Minnesota related topic and my family has been connected to some of Judge Lord's other cases. I first heard about this topic from my mom who suggested the topic to me. In my opinion, the most interesting part of my topic so far is the fact that it was such a local case.
I did my research by looking at sources that are online. I found pictures of Reserve Mining’s processing plant, and many articles about the case. I also went to the Minneapolis Central Library and found many newspaper articles about Judge Lord from the 1970's. One source that was very useful was an article from Minnesota Public Radio. One problem that I encountered was finding sources that were not repeating things that I already knew.
The presentation category I chose for History Day is a website. I chose this category because I had enough photos for a website but not enough for a documentary. I also like writing so I wanted a bigger word limit, but I didn’t want to do a paper. I created my project by writing my summaries in Google Drive and then copy and pasting them into Weebly. I then added photos, quotes, and formated the website. The materials that I used were photos of the Reserve Mining Company’s processing plant in Silver Bay, quotes by Judge Lord and people who knew him, photos of Lake Superior and the surrounding area, and political cartoons about pollution. The most enjoyable part of History Day was interviewing Priscilla Lord; the most frustrating part of History Day was recording things in my bibliography.
My thesis refers to the leadership that Judge Miles Lord showed by shutting down Reserve Mining Company in 1974, and to the legacy that he created. My project relates to the History Day theme of Leadership and Legacy because Judge Lord displayed leadership through his ruling. This case was also the first major case where a company was held responsible for it’s environmental impact. Therefore, he created a legacy of holding companies accountable for their impact on the environment. My topic has impacted history by giving the EPA more power to govern pollution laws. His decision also saved many, many people from a very threatening health risk. My topic has impacted life today by being the first case where a company was held responsible for their environmental impact. Judge Lord’s ruling sent a message to other companies stating that polluting the environment would not be tolerated.
